Two days a month is easy to miss, so plan ahead. For a rusted or corroding can, the brochure says to call the North Platte Fire Department at 308-535-6768 first. Phone numbers differ: the city’s HHW and sanitation pages show 308-535-6724 and name Public Service at 308-535-6700; the state directory lists 308-535-6740; PaintCare lists Keep North Platte & Lincoln County Beautiful at 308-534-8100.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

There is no weekday walk-in. Store the cans upright in a cool, dry spot with lids tight and come back on the next 2nd or 4th Thursday. Use the time to dry out any latex.
A 5-gallon container is the largest allowed. Make sure the lid seals, and bring it to Sycamore on a collection Thursday. If the bucket is rusting, call the Fire Department at 308-535-6768 first.
Leave the lid off or stir in kitty litter until it’s solid, then put it in the trash. PaintCare’s listing says latex must be dried out.
County residents can use the city facility. Bring the same closed, labeled containers and go on a collection Thursday.
Take oil-based paint, primer, turpentine and varnish to 1308 N Sycamore St on the 2nd or 4th Thursday of the month, 7 a.m.–1 p.m. Dry latex paint at home with kitty litter and put it in the trash. Containers must be closed and no bigger than 5 gallons or 50 pounds.
In North Platte, Nebraska, the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1308 N Sycamore St is open only two days a month: the 2nd and 4th Thursday, 7 a.m.–1 p.m. It is for residents of North Platte and Lincoln County. Bring oil-based paint, primer, turpentine and varnish there. Latex paint should be dried out and thrown away. Nebraska has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take paint back.
The facility is open only on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, 7 a.m.–1 p.m., and not on holidays. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s September 2026 directory shows the same schedule.
PaintCare’s listing says latex paint must be dried out. The Keep North Platte & Lincoln County Beautiful brochure lists latex paint with items to dry and throw away: spread it on newspaper, rags or old carpet, or mix it with kitty litter or dry cement mix.
Each item must be in a closed container of no more than 5 gallons or 50 pounds. Bring smaller cans rather than one big bucket.
The city transfer station at 3320 W North Lake Road, about seven miles south and west of town (308-535-6710; Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–4 p.m.), lists trash, yard waste, rubble, car batteries, appliances, tires and used oil in 1-gallon jugs. Paint is not on its list; use the Sycamore facility.
The brochure says corroding containers need special handling and to call the North Platte Fire Department at 308-535-6768 for instructions.
Nebraska has no PaintCare store take-back. The state environment agency suggests using products up or giving usable ones to someone who will use them. Keep North Platte & Lincoln County Beautiful (308-534-8100, 715 S Jeffers St, 3rd floor) answers recycling questions. Lincoln County towns like Hershey, Sutherland, Maxwell and Wallace use the same Sycamore site. PaintCare’s listing says businesses can’t use it; the brochure points to a licensed hazardous waste contractor instead.

Tighten lids and keep labels on. Check that no container is over 5 gallons or 50 pounds. Leave latex cans open to dry, or speed it up with kitty litter. Load oil-based cans the morning of a collection Thursday so they aren’t sitting in a hot vehicle.

October 16, 2026: read the City of North Platte’s Household Hazardous Waste, Sanitation Division and Transfer Station pages, the Keep North Platte & Lincoln County Beautiful recycling page and both pages of its HHW brochure (images), the Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s HHW directory (revised September 2026), Nebraska DEE’s HHW release and PaintCare’s locator data (site 15065).
