Drop-off is at 1555 Wyoming St., at the tan shipping container, not the store entrance. Turn off your engine; staff check your confirmation and unload. Pack products in plastic totes away from passengers, and keep bleach apart from acids and flammables. Questions: hcd@homeresource.org.

This is a donation, not disposal. Latex that fails the test goes in your trash once completely dry. Its reuse page repeats the latex wording under oil-based paint, so ask staff before bringing oil-based cans to donate.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

If it’s under 5 years old, never frozen and at least half full, donate it at Home ReSource. If not, pick up free sawdust there, dry it out and bin it.
Book a Monday slot online, bring it in its labeled can to the tan container at 1555 Wyoming St., and pay $20. Add other flammables, up to 10 gallons total, so one fee covers them.
The limit is 10 gallons per appointment, across everything. Split it into two Monday appointments.
Latex costs nothing to dry and trash. For oil-based paint, email hcd@homeresource.org before booking to ask about the $20 fee.
Dry out latex paint with sawdust or cat litter and put it in the trash, or donate good cans to Home ReSource. For oil-based paint, stain and spray paint, book a Monday appointment at Home ReSource’s chemical drop-off, 1515 Wyoming St.; it’s $20 for up to 10 gallons.
In Missoula, Montana, latex paint goes in your trash once it’s completely dry, or to Home ReSource as a donation if it’s still good. Oil-based paint, stain and spray paint go to the Household Chemical Disposal site at Home ReSource on Wyoming Street, by Monday appointment, for $20.
Home ReSource’s chemical drop-off turns away latex and water-based paint and stain. A quick test: if the label says clean up with soap and water, it can’t go there.
Home ReSource gives away sawdust for drying latex. Mix it or cat litter into the can, or spread the paint on cardboard in the sun, and let it dry completely before it goes in the trash.
The Home ReSource store takes latex and acrylic paint that’s under 5 years old, never frozen, at least half full and sealed with a label. Any can size is fine.
Appointments run Mondays 11 a.m.–4 p.m. and can be booked up to 30 days ahead. The $20 fee covers up to 10 gallons and isn’t refunded. If the fee is a barrier, email hcd@homeresource.org before booking.
Chemical drop-off is at 1555 Wyoming St., at the tan shipping container. Arrive within 10 minutes of your time or you may lose the slot.
Montana has no PaintCare program, so paint stores won’t take it back for free. Montana DEQ says latex can be hardened with clay cat litter (two parts litter to one part paint) or a paint hardener and put in the trash, and suggests offering good paint to friends, neighbors or charities. Montana DEQ also says latex keeps about 10 years if it hasn’t frozen. Missoula’s chemical drop-off replaced the old once-a-year Haz Waste Days event in 2024.

For the chemical site: keep products in original containers with readable labels and tight lids, keep the total at 10 gallons, pack them in a plastic tote away from passengers, and keep bleach apart from flammables. For latex: leave the lid off and dry it fully before it goes in the trash.
Full preparation checklist →Yes, once it’s completely dry. Home ReSource says to mix in sawdust or kitty litter, or dry it on cardboard in the sun.
$20 per appointment, non-refundable, for up to 10 gallons. Email hcd@homeresource.org first if the fee is a hardship.
No. It’s appointment only, on Mondays 11 a.m.–4 p.m., and same-day slots may not be open.
Home ReSource’s FAQ says it opens one day a month in winter. Check the booking page for dates.
No. It takes household materials only, not waste from businesses or schools.
October 13, 2026: read Home ReSource’s Household Chemical Disposal page, accepted-materials list, preparation guide, reuse-and-recycle paint guide and FAQ; Missoula Public Health’s household chemical disposal page; Montana DEQ’s recycling resources page and its used paint guide; and PaintCare’s non-program listing. PaintCare’s listing still shows Tuesday and Friday appointments and a 406-258-4890 phone; Home ReSource and Missoula Public Health both now say Mondays 11–4, and Home ReSource lists 406-541-8300, so we use those. The booking page also mentions September closures and a fall Saturday but gives no year, so we left them out. Unresolved: the FAQ’s “one day a month in winter” may be out of date. No residency rule is stated by Home ReSource or Missoula Public Health. We did not check a Missoula garbage hauler’s rules on dried paint.
