Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.

In Bozeman, Montana, oil-based paint goes free to the household hazardous waste drop-off at the Bozeman Convenience Site on Story Mill Road, Tuesday to Saturday. Latex paint isn’t taken there: Gallatin Solid Waste says to harden it with cat litter, sawdust or sand and put it in your trash.
The Bozeman Convenience Site takes household hazardous waste free from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, except holidays. It’s closed Sunday and Monday.

The district lists drop-off hours for households and mentions appointments only for businesses. PaintCare’s listing says to stay in your car until staff talk to you and to keep liquids in containers of 5 gallons or less.

Montana has no PaintCare program, so paint stores won’t take paint back for free. For latex, the trash route above is the county’s own advice. Montana DEQ adds that usable paint can go to friends, neighbors or a charity, and that you can mix leftovers of the same type to use as primer. Montana DEQ also says oil-based paint can be hardened with an additive for the trash, but Gallatin Solid Waste sends it to the Convenience Site, so use that.

Keep oil-based paint in its original can, lid tight, 5 gallons or smaller. Don’t bring latex to the hazardous waste area. Solidify it at home in a well-ventilated spot until it won’t pour. Come before 2:30 p.m.
Full preparation checklist →No. Its hazardous waste list says oil-based paint, no latex. Solidify latex and put it in the trash.
Yes, household hazardous waste is free at the Convenience Site.
2:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, an hour before the rest of the site closes at 3:30.
The site is for residents of the Gallatin Solid Waste Management District, and PaintCare’s listing says Gallatin County. Call 406-451-1230 if you’re unsure.
No. The site is closed Sunday and Monday.
October 13, 2026: read Gallatin Solid Waste’s household hazardous waste page, its Bozeman Convenience Site page (hours, fees) and its Convenience Site FAQs, its 2024 brochure (older second-Saturday events, now replaced by Tuesday–Saturday drop-off), Montana DEQ’s recycling resources page and used paint guide, and PaintCare’s non-program listing. The 5-gallon container rule, the stay-in-your-car rule and the “empty, dry or leaking” rule come from PaintCare’s listing, not the district. Unresolved: no current page states a quantity cap for households beyond 5-gallon containers, and none says what holiday closures apply in late 2026. The district says the site is for non-commercial district residents but doesn’t say how it checks. We found no Bozeman paint reuse or swap program.
