THE LOCAL ANSWERDry out leftover latex paint with sawdust or cat litter, leave the can lid off, and put it inside your Republic Services trash cart; Joplin’s hazardous waste drop-off doesn’t take latex. For oil-based paint, stain or thinner, call the city at 417-624-0820 (ext. 1501 on the current city pages, ext. 501 in the 2014 brochure) before you drive to 1310 West A Street, because the city’s web page and its 2014 brochure disagree on whether paint is taken. Spray paint cans are on the accepted list.
This guide covers Joplin, Missouri. The City of Joplin runs a free household hazardous waste drop-off at its Drop-Off Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street, for residents of McDonald, Newton, Jasper, Barton and Vernon counties. It doesn’t take latex paint; the city says to dry latex and set it out with the trash. The city’s own lists disagree on whether oil-based paint is taken: the current web page lists home maintenance products "except latex paint" as accepted but also lists paint as not accepted, and the July 2014 brochure excludes all paint. Missouri has no PaintCare program, so there are no PaintCare store drop-offs.
Latex: dry it, then it goes inside the cart
The city’s hazardous waste page lists paint as not accepted and says to stir in sawdust or cat litter (60% litter to 40% paint), let it dry, leave the lid off and set it out with the trash. Since the new Republic Services contract took effect Oct. 1, 2026, Republic empties only what is inside your cart with the cart lid fully closed. So put the dried can in the cart, not next to it. Paint is also on the list of things that can’t go in the recycling cart.
Oil-based paint: the city’s lists disagree
The accepted list on the city’s web page includes "Home Maintenance Products (except latex paint)", which reads as if oil-based paint is taken. The same page lists "Paint" as not accepted, with drying directions. The city’s July 2014 brochure, which Missouri DNR’s facility map still links to, says "Home Maintenance Products (except paint)" and calls the paint exclusion a budgetary decision. The web page has no date, so you can’t tell which list is newer. Call before you load up. The brochure and DNR give 417-624-0820 ext. 501; the city’s Solid Waste page and the Joplin Recycles site list ext. 1501 for the Recycling Center.
Five counties can use the drop-off, with ID
The 1310 West A Street site takes household hazardous waste from residents of McDonald, Newton, Jasper, Barton and Vernon counties. Bring proper ID. Commercial and school waste is turned away. It’s open Tuesday and Thursday noon–6 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.–3 p.m. The city’s page names the Region M Solid Waste Management District among the site’s funders; Missouri DNR lists the district at 1801 W. 32nd St., Suite C124, Joplin (417-625-6626). The site is closed on some holidays, including the Saturday before Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Ask about the free reuse shelf
The 2014 brochure says selected products dropped off here are checked for reuse value and given back to the public for free. The city says it can’t guarantee those products, and you take them at your own risk. The current web page doesn’t mention the program, so ask staff whether it still runs before you count on finding stain or primer there.
Bulk pickup and the transfer stations are for bulky items
Republic Services gives each Joplin home four scheduled bulk pickups a year, up to four cubic yards each (800-431-1507). The city also pays part of the cost for Joplin residents to drop up to 2,000 pounds of bulky items, brush and limbs at the GFL Joplin Transfer Station, 3700 W. 7th St., with a sewer bill and driver’s license. Neither page mentions paint. For Republic’s transfer station in Galena, Kansas, the city says to call 620-783-5841 about what is accepted. Ask before you bring any paint to these places.
