Plan for the second or fourth Saturday from April to October, or the second Saturday from November to March, 7:30–11:30 am. Bring spray cans and thinner then too, since the stores don't take them.
Use the stores: Fleet Supply takes 10 gallons a visit, Sherwin-Williams and Donahue Ace take 5. The county site takes business paint by appointment. Its fee schedule lists $1.00 a pound but no fee for very small businesses, so ask when you book. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare for a free pickup.
Check the Reuse Room at the county site first. It gives away paint, cleaners and automotive products to Rice County residents 18 and older.
You use the same county site as Faribault, with the same free drop-off for households. Northfield Ace Hardware on Water St S is also on PaintCare's list for a few cans.
Take house paint to the Rice County Solid Waste Facility, 3800 E 145th St (Dundas address), Monday–Friday 7:30 am–3:30 pm; it's free for Rice County households. It's also open some Saturday mornings: the second and fourth Saturdays from April to October, and only the second Saturday in winter. For a few cans, Faribault Fleet Supply on Western Ave takes up to 10 gallons.
Faribault, Minnesota, is the Rice County seat. Paint from Faribault homes goes to the Rice County Solid Waste Facility at 3800 E 145th St, north of town with a Dundas address. It's free for Rice County households and open weekdays all year, plus some Saturday mornings. Three Faribault stores also take paint. Note: Faribault County is a different county, around Blue Earth, and its programs don't serve the city of Faribault.
The county site is open Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–3:30 pm, all year. On Saturdays it's open 7:30–11:30 am, but only on the second and fourth Saturday from April to October, and only the second Saturday from November to March. It's closed on legal holidays.
The Reuse Room at the same site gives away paint, automotive products and cleaners that other people dropped off. It's for county residents 18 and older, during the facility's regular hours. Check the shelves before you buy a gallon for a small job.
PaintCare lists Faribault Fleet Supply, 80 Western Ave, at 10 gallons per visit. Sherwin-Williams at 204 Western Ave NW and Donahue Ace Hardware at 421 2nd Ave NW downtown take 5. All three take paint from households and businesses. Call first.
Rice County's page says only Rice County residents, property owners and businesses may use the site. But PaintCare lists it for households in Rice, Steele and Waseca counties, and Steele County's page says its residents may bring usable household hazardous products here. If you live outside Rice County, call 507-332-6833 before you drive.
The county takes business hazardous waste by appointment only; call 507-332-6833. Its 2026 fee schedule lists business paint at $1.00 a pound (a gallon counts as 10 pounds), plus a $50 business fee that can change with the amount. The same schedule lists very small businesses (VSQG, up to 2,200 pounds a year) at no fee. So ask what you'll pay when you book. Steele County also sends its very small businesses here.
PaintCare also lists Northfield Ace Hardware (670 Water St S), Owatonna Ace Hardware (122 W Vine St), Sherwin-Williams in Owatonna (125 Oakdale St) and Waseca Ace Hardware. Steele County runs its own site at 9420 SE 64th Ave near Blooming Prairie. It's open May through September only, so it's closed until it reopens in May. Faribault County's hazardous waste program in Truman is a different county's and isn't for Faribault residents. For 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare for a free pickup.

Keep paint in its original labeled can with the lid on tight. Don't bring leaking, unlabeled or empty cans to the stores. Spray cans and thinner go to the county site, not the stores. Pack cans upright in a box. Rice County says the site is for Rice County residents, property owners and businesses only.
Full preparation checklist →Take it to the Rice County Solid Waste Facility, 3800 E 145th St, Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–3:30 pm. It's free for Rice County households. For a few cans, Fleet Supply, Sherwin-Williams and Donahue Ace in Faribault also take paint.
Some Saturdays, 7:30–11:30 am: the second and fourth Saturday from April to October, and only the second Saturday from November to March. Call 507-332-6833 if you're unsure.
No. The city of Faribault is in Rice County. Faribault County is a separate county around Blue Earth, with its own program in Truman. Use Rice County's site.
Maybe. Steele County's page says its residents can bring products there, and PaintCare lists Steele households. Rice County's own page says Rice County only. Call 507-332-6833 first. Owatonna also has two PaintCare stores.
Yes, if there's some on the shelf. The Reuse Room at the county site gives away usable paint and other products to Rice County residents 18 and older.
Checked October 16, 2026 from Rice County's hazardous waste, Solid Waste Division and FAQ pages, its Reuse Room flier and 2026 fee schedule, Steele County's hazardous waste page, Faribault County's solid waste page and PaintCare's Minnesota page and locator data; no calls or visits. Rice County's pages blocked automated downloads, so we read them in a browser. Rice County says the site is for Rice County only. PaintCare lists Rice, Steele and Waseca households, and Steele County sends its residents (for usable products) and its very small businesses there. The fee schedule lists business paint at $1.00 a pound but also lists very small businesses (VSQG) at no fee, so the real business cost is unclear. Rice County's business FAQ gives 507-338-6833; all other pages say 507-332-6833. We found no City of Faribault page on paint, no county rule on dried latex and no ID rule, and didn't check store hours.
