THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint to Shady Grove Transfer Station, 16101 Frederick Road, Derwood, Monday–Saturday 7 a.m.–5 p.m., with proof you live in Montgomery County. County pages limit wet paint to 5 gallons a month; call 311 for more. For paint only, try Sherwin-Williams, 856 Rockville Pike.
The City of Rockville no longer collects paint or household chemicals; Montgomery County's Shady Grove Transfer Station in Derwood does. Since April 2026, nearby PaintCare stores also take paint free.
The city truck won't take it
Rockville's trash pickup serves houses and most townhouses in the city. It no longer takes household hazardous waste, oil-based paint included, and paint cans can't go in recycling.
Plan around the 5-gallon monthly rule
County pages allow 5 gallons of wet paint a month (hardened paint is unlimited) and want a 311 call before over 15 gallons of liquid. PaintCare lists 200 gallons per visit. Until the county updates, call 311 before a big load.
Use the Frederick Road entrance Monday–Saturday
The hazardous waste area is in the recycling section, through the MD 355 (Frederick Road) resident entrance. On Sundays and holidays that entrance is closed; use the Shady Grove Road truck entrance.
Businesses and contractors pay through ECOWISE
Staff can turn away loads that look like business waste. Contractors, and companies that took paint from a client's home, sign up for ECOWISE (free) and pay by the pound there, weekdays 8 a.m.–noon.
Usable paint can go to the giveaway shelf
Usable paint that hasn't frozen may go on the county's free Paint Giveaway shelf at Shady Grove. To take paint, you sign a waiver. Colors are first-come.
