Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Sioux City.

5800 28th St, Sioux City, IA 51108
Everyone getting out of a vehicle at the Convenience Center must wear a high-visibility vest or bright clothing, and there's a fee if the center has to give you a vest. Loads must be covered or tied down, or you pay a $15 surcharge. The city says it is also taking American flags for retirement by local VFW and Legion posts.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

Most wall paint is latex. Pull the lids, mix in kitty litter or sawdust until it won't pour, let it set, and put the cans in your garbage tote. That skips the latex fee at the drop-off.
Load them in your trunk and go to the Citizen's Convenience Center at 5800 28th St. on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday before 2 p.m. There's no listed charge for these, and no appointment.
The Convenience Center is open Saturday 9 a.m.–2 p.m. for trash and recycling, but not for hazardous materials. Dry any latex at home, and hold the oil-based cans for a weekday trip.
The city drop-off doesn't take business waste. The city sends contractors' construction debris to the Jackson, Nebraska landfill, but it says nothing about paint or hazardous waste there. Hire a licensed hazardous waste company for leftover oil-based paint.
Take oil-based paint, spray paint and stain to 5800 28th St. on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.; no appointment needed. Latex is taken for an extra fee, or you can dry it and put it in your garbage tote. The drop-off is for Sioux City households, not businesses.
Sioux City, Iowa, takes household paint at one place: the Household Hazardous Materials drop-off at the Citizen's Convenience Center, 5800 28th St., on the old city landfill. It's open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with no appointment. Oil-based paint, spray paint and stain go there. Latex costs extra there, so drying it and putting it in the garbage is the cheaper choice. Iowa has no PaintCare program, so stores don't take paint back.
The Convenience Center is open six days a week for trash and recycling, but hazardous materials are taken only Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m.–2 p.m. A Saturday trip with paint won't work.
The city takes latex paint for an added fee it doesn't post. The cheaper path is the one the city lists: leave the lid off, or stir in kitty litter, sawdust or a paint hardener, then put the dried can in your Gill Hauling garbage tote.
You must wear a high-visibility vest or bright clothing when you're out of your car at the Convenience Center, or pay for one there. The center doesn't take cash or personal checks; use a debit or credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay.
The city says the drop-off is for residents. Iowa DNR lists this site as Woodbury County's main collection center, plus a satellite at 2210 Ida Ave. in Moville, but gives no hours and a different phone (402-670-4673). PaintCare's listing says Sioux City only. Rural Woodbury County and Moville residents should call 402-414-4179 before driving in.
PaintCare's listing says Sioux Falls, South Dakota, runs a hazardous waste facility five days a week (Tuesday–Saturday) for households in five South Dakota counties. Sioux City's drop-off takes paint three days a week and charges extra for latex.
Dry latex at home and put it in your garbage tote; Iowa DNR says latex isn't hazardous waste. Iowa DNR also suggests offering usable paint to neighbors, churches or community groups. Contractors and businesses can't use the city drop-off. The city sends contractors' construction debris to the Jackson Landfill (the city also calls it the LP Gill Landfill), 1402 U.S. 20 in Jackson, Nebraska (402-259-0026). The city says nothing about that landfill taking paint or hazardous waste, so a business with oil-based paint should hire a licensed hazardous waste company.

Sort cans into oil-based and latex. Keep oil-based paint, stain and spray paint in the original containers with tight lids. Cover or tie down your load to avoid the $15 surcharge. Wear something bright, bring a card, and arrive by early afternoon.
Full preparation checklist →Dried latex, yes. The city says latex that has dried or been soaked up with kitty litter, sawdust or hardener can go in your garbage. Liquid oil-based paint goes to the drop-off at 5800 28th St.
The city says latex is taken for an additional fee but doesn't list the amount. Call 402-414-4179 or 712-255-8345 to ask. Drying it at home is free.
No. Just come Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., except holidays.
The Convenience Center is closed Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026, so use Tuesday or Wednesday that week. It also closes at noon on Thursday, Dec. 24.
The city says the service is for its residents, and PaintCare's listing says Sioux City only. We found nothing saying Nebraska or South Dakota residents can use it, so call 402-414-4179 before you go.
October 15, 2026: read the City of Sioux City's Household Hazardous Materials, Citizen's Convenience Center, Garbage & Recycling Collection, Garbage Fees and Commercial Solid Waste pages (the older HHM web address on PaintCare's listing returns a 404); Iowa DNR's Regional Collection Center county list and latex paint fact sheet; and PaintCare's non-program listing for the site. The hours, the 402-414-4179 and 712-255-8345 numbers and the no-appointment rule come from the Convenience Center page. Gill Hauling is the city's garbage and recycling hauler; we found no source saying it runs the hazardous materials drop-off. Unresolved: the city doesn't post the latex fee amount or any quantity limit. Iowa DNR lists the site as Woodbury County's main center plus a Moville satellite at 2210 Ida Ave., with a different phone (402-670-4673) and ZIP (51105); the city uses 51108, PaintCare uses 51106, and the city doesn't mention Moville, so we tell rural residents to call. PaintCare's listing says no latex, but the city says latex is taken for a fee; we follow the city. We found no source on whether Nebraska or South Dakota residents across the river can use the site, and no current Siouxland Habitat ReStore paint policy, so neither is covered as an option.
