THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to the Dubois County Process Center, 1103 S. 350 W., Jasper, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–1 p.m. It takes latex and oil-based paint for $1 to $10 an item. If you'd rather not pay, let latex dry completely and put it out with Jasper city trash in a bag with a $2 tag.

In Jasper, Indiana, paint goes to the Dubois County Solid Waste Management District's Process Center at 1103 S. 350 W. It's open weekdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and charges $1 to $10 an item for latex and oil-based paint. Jasper's city trash crews will take a paint can only once the paint is completely dry. Good paint can go to the Habitat ReStore in Huntingburg.

It's a mornings-only drop-off

The Process Center closes at 1 p.m. Monday to Friday. If you work days, use a Saturday: in 2026 the last ones are November 7, 8 a.m.–noon, and December 5 if the weather allows. The county says Saturday hours can change, so call 812-482-7865 closer to the date. Saturdays are for residents only, not businesses.

Paint costs per item

Dubois County charges for most items. The county's Waste Wizard lists $1 to $10 for latex or oil-based paint, $1 to $5 for thinner and spray cans, and $2 for an empty gallon can ($1 for smaller ones). The exact price depends on the item, so ask on site.

Dried paint can go out with city trash

Jasper's Street Department collects paint cans only if the paint has completely dried. Stir in sand or kitty litter to speed it up. Every trash bag needs a $2 city trash tag and must weigh 30 pounds or less. The county's Waste Wizard also says opened cans with only dry paint left can go in the regular trash.

One center for the whole county

The Process Center serves all of Dubois County. That includes Huntingburg, Ferdinand, Holland, Birdseye, Dubois, Ireland and Haysville, where the district runs its recycling and trash drop sites. Those drop sites don't take liquid paint. Small businesses can use the Process Center on weekdays.

Unload it yourself

Staff don't unload your vehicle, and there's no help on Saturdays either. Pack cans so you can lift them out.

Free pickup programs and other options

Indiana has no PaintCare program, so stores don't take paint back. Indiana's environment department (IDEM) says paint should go in the trash only when it is completely dry; clay cat litter speeds that up. Never pour it down a drain. Dubois County's Waste Wizard suggests giving good paint to the Habitat ReStore, a school or college theater group, a charity or a church. Empty, dried cans can also go to the county drop sites in a tagged trash bag.

Check the label: "water cleanup" means latex; "mineral spirits" or "alkyd" means oil-based. Keep lids tight and labels on. Sort your cans by type to speed up the fee count. Bring a way to pay, since most items have a fee. Arrive well before 1 p.m. on weekdays.

Sources and how we checked13

October 16, 2026: read the Dubois County Solid Waste Management District's Process Center page (weekday hours, fees $.25 to $20, open to residents, agencies, organizations and small businesses, residents unload), its 2026 Saturday hours flyer (residents only; November 7 and, weather permitting, December 5; hours subject to change; no unloading help), its 3R Waste Wizard entries for latex paint, oil-based paint, empty paint cans, paint thinner and aerosols, its recycling sites page and its 2021 brochure, the City of Jasper's residential trash page (dried paint cans collected; $2 tags; 30-pound limit), the Dubois County Habitat ReStore page, IDEM's household hazardous waste page, and PaintCare's listing. A peer review the same day reopened every source, including each Waste Wizard entry. Unresolved: the exact fee for a given item (the county gives ranges and says to ask), any gallon limit, and whether the ReStore takes opened cans (its own page doesn't mention paint; the county's Waste Wizard names it for good, unused paint). The city's trash page lists the district at 812-481-7040; the district's own page uses 812-482-7865. The ReStore page lists 812-482-5909 for donations and 812-482-5995 in its footer.
