THE LOCAL ANSWERTake oil-based paint, stain and thinner to Vanderburgh County's free Tox Away Day, set for Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m. to noon, at the former Roberts Stadium lot (enter on E. Franklin St. behind Swonder Ice Arena). It is for county households only. Latex is not taken: let it harden with kitty litter or sawdust and put it in your trash cart.
In Evansville, Indiana, oil-based paint goes to Vanderburgh County's Tox Away Day. The county's solid waste district holds it twice a year in the former Roberts Stadium parking lot. The fall 2026 day is set for Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m. to noon. It is free for Vanderburgh County households. Latex paint is not taken there; the district says to let it harden and put it in the regular trash. Indiana has no paint take-back program, so paint stores do not collect old paint.
Two collection days in 2026, nothing in between
The Vanderburgh County Solid Waste District calls Tox Away Day an annual program, and in 2026 it set one in spring and one in fall. The spring day was March 28. The fall day is set for Saturday, October 31. No year-round hazardous waste drop-off is listed for the county. If you miss October 31, store oil-based cans safely until the 2027 dates are posted.
Use the Franklin Street entrance
The lot is the former Roberts Stadium parking lot. The district says to enter on E. Franklin Street, directly behind Swonder Ice Arena. PaintCare's listing for the event asks you to put your items in the trunk or truck bed so workers can unload them.
Latex goes in the cart once it is hard
The district's own list says latex paint can go in regular trash once it is hard. Let it air dry, or stir in kitty litter or sawdust. Liquid latex should not go out. Evansville's recycling list names only metal drink containers and lids, not paint cans, so the dried can goes in the trash cart.
Heavy trash pickup is not a paint option
City residents who pay for trash service on their Evansville Water and Sewer Utility bill can book free heavy trash pickup through Republic Services, as often as every two weeks. Hazardous materials are on its not-allowed list, so don't set paint thinner or oil-based cans out with furniture.
Darmstadt and the rest of the county use the same day
Tox Away Day is for Vanderburgh County households, not just city residents. The district's board includes a Darmstadt Town Council member, and county residents outside city limits use the same event. Businesses are turned away.
