THE LOCAL ANSWERDry latex paint with kitty litter, mulch or sawdust and put it in your Bonner County trash. Take oil-based paint, stain and spray paint to a county hazardous waste Saturday, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m.: Colburn on November 7 or December 5, or Dufort in Sagle on November 21 or December 19. It's free for up to 10 gallons with your solid waste sticker.
In Sandpoint, Idaho, paint goes to Bonner County's free household hazardous waste days. These are held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., rotating among five county sites. Colburn, north of town on Pinecone Road, takes it on the first Saturday of most months. Dufort, in Sagle, takes it on the third Saturday of each month. Bring your Bonner County solid waste sticker. The county says dried latex can go in the regular trash.
Paint days rotate, so check the site
Bonner County's sites are open every day for trash, but they take hazardous waste on only one Saturday at a time. The 2026 calendar runs Colburn on the first Saturday (none in July), Idaho Hill near Oldtown on most second Saturdays, and Dufort on the third. Clark Fork and Dickensheet near Coolin take a few turns each year. The rest of 2026: Colburn November 7 and December 5, Idaho Hill November 14 and December 12, Dufort November 21 and December 19.
No sticker, no drop-off
The county fee schedule says hazardous waste is free for up to 10 gallons, but a sticker is required. Each home that pays the county solid waste fee gets two stickers, mailed at the beginning of December. Renters should ask their landlord for theirs; the county asks landlords to pass them on. Lost stickers are replaced only for windshield damage or a vehicle accident.
Dry your latex instead of hauling it
Bonner County's flyer and waste types page say dry latex paint can go in the regular trash once it is solid. Mix it with kitty litter, mulch or sawdust. The sources disagree about bringing liquid latex: the county's waste types page lists it as accepted, but PaintCare's listing for every Bonner site says latex isn't taken. Drying it is the sure option.
10 gallons per visit, and stay in the car
You can bring up to 10 gallons per visit. Staff unload your vehicle, so stay inside. No out-of-county waste, no business waste, and no electric vehicle or e-bike batteries.
Empty cans don't go in the metal bin
The county's metal bins don't take paint cans or aerosol cans. Harden leftover latex in its can and put it in the trash.
