THE LOCAL ANSWERBring oil-based paint to DSWA's Jones Crossroads Landfill, 28560 Landfill Lane, Georgetown, any Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; it's free for Delaware residents. Latex is taken there only on the last Monday of each month, 10 to 2, in quart, gallon or 5-gallon cans. Small amounts of latex can be dried out and put in the trash instead.
In Georgetown, Delaware (Sussex County), leftover paint goes to the Delaware Solid Waste Authority's Jones Crossroads Landfill on Landfill Lane, which DSWA also calls the Southern Recycling Center. It takes oil-based paint and other household chemicals free from Delaware residents every Monday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Latex paint is taken there only on the last Monday of each month. Delaware has no PaintCare program, so there's no free paint take-back at stores.
Monday is Georgetown's paint day
DSWA runs four weekly hazardous waste sites, each on a different day: New Castle on Saturday, Newark on Wednesday, Cheswold on Friday and Jones Crossroads in Georgetown on Monday. Each takes latex only on the last of its weekdays in the month. If Monday doesn't work, Cheswold's Friday hours are the same, 10 to 2.
Landfill hours aren't paint hours
The landfill is open Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the recycling drop-off center 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. But household chemicals are only taken Mondays, 10 to 2, and DSWA lists latex paint at this site as "scheduled events only." Don't show up on a Saturday with paint. The recycling center does take electronics Monday to Saturday, 8:30 to 3:30, so one Monday trip can clear an old TV and oil-based paint.
The next latex Monday
DSWA's events calendar has latex collection at Jones Crossroads set for Oct. 26, 2026, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. That listing sits under a Cheswold event series but names Jones Crossroads and gives its address. The rule on DSWA's program pages is the last Monday of each month, so check the calendar or call 1-800-404-7080 before a special trip.
This year's southern Delaware Saturday events are over
DSWA's 2026 Saturday collections in Fenwick Island, Seaford, Rehoboth Beach, Milford, Dagsboro and Lewes have all happened; the Lewes one at Love Creek Elementary on Oct. 10 was the last. None was held in Georgetown. The only later Saturday events on the 2026 schedule are in Wilmington and Newark, so for Georgetown the Monday site is it until DSWA posts 2027 dates.
Keep paint out of Casella's carts
The town's curbside hauler, Casella (302-934-1364), picks up trash weekly and recycling every other week. Its 2026 town calendar lists hazardous materials as not accepted in recycling. Empty, dry paint cans go in the trash with the lid off, as DNREC advises.
