Paint recycling
in Delaware.
Paint disposal in Wilmington. Delaware has no free paint recycling program, but the Delaware Solid Waste Authority takes household paint free from residents at four sites and at Saturday events around the state.
Check your local rules.
The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) runs household hazardous waste drop-off for the whole state. Oil-based paint, stain and thinner are taken free every week: Saturdays at the Delaware Recycling Center in New Castle, Wednesdays in Newark, Fridays in Cheswold and Mondays at Jones Crossroads near Georgetown. Latex paint is only taken on the last of those days each month, in quart, gallon or 5-gallon containers. DSWA also holds Saturday collection events around the state that take oil-based paint but not latex. DNREC, the state environment agency, says small amounts of latex can be dried with kitty litter or shredded newspaper and thrown out. PaintCare’s listings for DSWA say households only, no businesses. DNREC tells businesses to use a waste disposal company or a Delaware-permitted hazardous waste transporter. Call DSWA at 1-800-404-7080.
No free state program.
Delaware doesn’t have a statewide paint program, so it depends on your city or county. Each city guide shows where latex and oil-based paint can go.

Spray cans, thinner and other chemicals?
Paint stores won’t take these. Take them to your local household hazardous waste site. Your city guide lists it.
