Airway Drive takes 5 gallons per customer per day, so add up your load first. Keep labels and lids on. For more than that, find a place that agrees to take it; store space isn't unlimited.
Stores won't take thinner, so use the county site, Thursday–Saturday, 7:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., which differs from the rest of the disposal site's hours. Bring proof of Sonoma County address and follow the hazardous waste signs, not the garbage line.
Sonoma lets empty latex cans go in recycling if they don't drip and have only a little dried paint, with lids off. That's all. Liquid paint and cans with oil-based paint left can't go in the cart.
A few paint cans? Use the Airway Drive paint store. Thinner or mixed chemicals? Go to the county hazardous waste site on Mecham Road, which keeps its own hours.
A few labeled cans can go to a Santa Rosa paint store. Mixed household chemicals go to the county site on Mecham Road.
Airway Drive is a PaintCare stop that takes five gallons. Mecham Road takes more kinds of hazardous waste but is open fewer hours.
The county site closes from late December to early January. If you're saving paint for a year-end trip, check the dates first.
Check Zero Waste Sonoma for collection events and Rover pickup; who can use them and the cost vary. PaintCare can review a 100-gallon-plus stockpile for free pickup.

Bring ID to the county site. Note each container's size, keep lids tight and pack the load so nothing spills.
Full preparation checklist →No. Zero Waste Sonoma sends oil paint cans with any paint left, even hardened, to hazardous waste or a related program.
Local rules are specific and differ from general state advice. Ask the county before binning it, or drop it off so you don't have to guess.
Regional materials mention Rover pickup, but its terms are unconfirmed, so we promise no price or say who can use it.
