Go to the hazardous waste area, not the garbage scales. The website shows an undated weather-closure alert, so confirm it's open before a long drive.
3 paint stores and 2 hazardous waste sites, closest first. Paint stores take house paint, stain and varnish, usually up to a set amount per visit. Hazardous waste sites also take chemicals like thinner, but some only serve local residents. Call before you go.

From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.
ReGen takes both, so one trip works. Stay within 15 gallons or 125 pounds. Hazardous waste drop-off starts at 9 a.m., later than other parts of the site.
Call 831-264-6386 for a separate appointment. ReGen screens small businesses at 27 gallons or 220 pounds a month, and its brochure lists a business processing fee. Get a current quote.
ReGen gives away usable paint at its reuse area near Last Chance Mercantile. Check hours and stock, since the paint page and hours page disagree on Mondays. Don't count on a color, amount or quality.
Habitat Monterey Bay won't take opened paint, and Monterey Disposal bans hazardous products from trash bins. Ask before setting up a donation or private haul.
Take household paint and solvents to ReGen Monterey's hazardous waste area, usually Monday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Call 831-264-6386 or check online first; the site shows an undated weather-closure alert.
Monterey's main public option is ReGen Monterey north of Marina. Its address says Salinas, but Monterey residents can use it and Salinas Valley households can't.
Paint goes to the hazardous waste program, not a paid landfill load. If you're also dumping furniture or debris, keep the paint reachable and ask staff which stop comes first.
The Del Monte Boulevard site serves Monterey and the district's western towns. Salinas residents should check their own program.
For a paint-only stockpile of 100+ gallons by can size, PaintCare offers a pickup review. We found no second local store with recent proof it takes paint. Check PaintCare's map for others.

Keep labels on and solvents apart from paint. Load upright, and call staff before moving anything leaking or unlabeled. Check that the site is open right before a long drive.
Full preparation checklist →Yes, for service-area residents. Business appointments and landfill dumping cost money.
No. Monterey Disposal keeps hazardous material out of carts, dumpsters and drop boxes. Its motor oil pickup doesn't take paint.
ReGen is the only public site we could confirm, with clear rules on who can use it. Reuse and PaintCare pickup are other options. We didn't list stores we couldn't confirm.
Still unclear: the undated weather alert, Monday reuse hours and business fees. We didn't call or check capacity, and don't treat the 2025 fee brochure as current.
Checked October 4, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
