THE LOCAL ANSWERDry out latex paint and put it in your garbage cart; the city says to stir in kitty litter, sawdust or mulch until it won’t drip, then leave the lid off. Save oil-based paint, stain and varnish for a free VPPSA household chemical collection. The Warhill High School collection was October 10, 2026, so the next ones open to you are York County’s on November 14 and Hampton’s on November 21, 2026, both 8 a.m.–noon.
Williamsburg, Virginia has no year-round paint drop-off. The city, James City County and York County share free household chemical collections run by the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA), and you can go to any member community’s event. Latex paint can also be dried out and put in your garbage cart.
Warhill is the home event, and 2026’s are done
James City County says its collections at Warhill High School, 4615 Opportunity Way, are held the second Saturday of February, April, June, August and October, 8 a.m. to noon. The last 2026 one was October 10.
You can go to York County or Hampton
VPPSA says every collection is open to residents of Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Hampton and Poquoson. York County’s is Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 105 Service Drive in Yorktown. Hampton’s is Saturday, November 21, 2026, in the Hampton Coliseum parking lot.
Jolly Pond doesn’t list paint
City residents can use James City County’s Jolly Pond Convenience Center with coupons ($20 for five) or a credit card. But the county’s free list at Jolly Pond, Tewning Road and Toano covers antifreeze, cooking grease, motor oil, empty propane tanks and car batteries. Paint isn’t on it.
No paint in the recycling cart
The city’s curbside recycling, now run by Republic Services, doesn’t accept paint or aerosol cans.
Give good paint to a charity
The city lists paint among things you can donate. It names CHKD (757-476-5437), DAV (757-220-0839), Good Samaritan (757-877-0644) and Habitat for Humanity (757-596-5553). Call first to see if they’ll take it.
