4303 Sulphur Springs Rd, Murfreesboro, TN 37129

Accepts
Oil-based (alkyd) paint. The county doesn't list latex at any center; it says to dry latex and put it in your household trash, and PaintCare's listing says Leanna takes no latex. Also takes electronics and 4- and 8-foot fluorescent tubes.
Who can use it
Rutherford County residents only. PaintCare's listing says households only, no businesses. Commercial waste is sent to the county transfer station on Landfill Road instead, and that station is not listed for paint.
Hours
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed Monday and Thursday. The county's general hours list says Sunday is for household garbage only, but its Leanna notice lists Sunday hours for oil-based paint. Check the county's Solid Waste News page for holiday and election-day closures.
Load limits
No paint amount limit is published. The county allows one visit a day, up to one pickup-truck load. PaintCare's listing says no empty, dry or leaking cans.
Fees
The county lists no fee for oil-based paint.

Call 615-898-7739 first. The City of Murfreesboro says oil-based paint is taken by appointment only, and PaintCare's listing also says to call for a reservation; the county's own page doesn't mention appointments. Leanna has taken oil-based paint since the Haley Road center closed for remodeling on June 24, 2024. The county says do not go to Haley Road. Its pages list Leanna's ZIP as both 37129 and 37128.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

Dry latex paint and put it in your trash, bagged with the lid off; Rutherford County doesn't list any drop-off for liquid latex. Take oil-based paint to the Leanna Convenience Center, 4303 Sulphur Springs Rd., after calling 615-898-7739. Haley Road is closed for remodeling.

In Murfreesboro and the rest of Rutherford County, Tennessee, oil-based paint goes to the county's Leanna Convenience Center on Sulphur Springs Road. The county doesn't list any drop-off for latex paint. It says to dry it and put it in your household trash. This is a different system from Nashville's, and Metro Nashville won't take hazardous waste from people who live outside Davidson County.

Leanna, not Haley Road

The Haley Road recycle center closed for remodeling on June 24, 2024, and the county says not to go there. Until it reopens, oil-based paint goes to Leanna, 4303 Sulphur Springs Rd. The county will post on its website and social media when Haley Road reopens.

Call before you load the car

The City of Murfreesboro says oil-based paint is taken by appointment only, at 615-898-7739. The county's own page just lists Leanna for oil-based paint and doesn't mention appointments. A quick call settles it.

Leanna is closed Monday and Thursday

County centers are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Leanna notice lists Sunday hours for oil-based paint, but the county's general hours list says Sunday is for household garbage only. For a paint run, a weekday or Saturday is the safer choice; ask when you call.

Leave the lid off so the driver can see

Rutherford County's paint guide says to bag a dried latex can but leave the lid off, so the garbage truck driver can see it's solid. Murfreesboro city trash must also be bagged before it goes in your cart. Clean, dry metal cans and lids can be recycled.

The state's October collection didn't take paint

Rutherford County's mobile household hazardous waste day was held October 10, 2026, at the city's mulch facility on Florence Road. It did not take paint. The state program stopped taking paint at these events and leaves paint to each county.

Free pickup programs and other options

Tennessee has no PaintCare program, so stores don't take paint back for free. Usable paint can go to a neighbor, a school drama department or a theater group, as the county suggests. The Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 850 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Mercury Blvd.) takes "almost everything" in donations, but its page doesn't mention paint; call 615-849-5994 before you bring any. Painting businesses aren't served by the county or the state's events and should use a permitted hazardous waste transporter, as TDEC advises.

Sort your cans first. Latex says "water-based" and cleans up with water; oil-based or alkyd paint cleans up with paint thinner. Keep oil-based paint in sealed, labeled cans and pack them upright. Bring something that shows you live in Rutherford County.

Murfreesboro questions5
Where do I take oil-based paint in Murfreesboro?

To the Leanna Convenience Center, 4303 Sulphur Springs Rd. Call 615-898-7739 first, because the city says it's by appointment.

Can I take latex paint to a convenience center?

The county doesn't list latex at any center; its rule is to dry it out. Use kitty litter, sawdust or a hardener, bag the can with the lid off, and put it in your trash.

Is the Haley Road center open again?

Not as of October 13, 2026. The county says it is closed for remodeling and not to go there.

I live in Smyrna or La Vergne. Where do I go?

Leanna in Murfreesboro. The county lists only Leanna for oil-based paint, even though Smyrna's center at 112 G Street takes electronics and mattresses.

Can I use Nashville's hazardous waste centers instead?

No. Metro Nashville refuses household hazardous waste from people who live outside Davidson County.

Sources and how we checked10

October 13, 2026 (peer review re-read every source; city pages via browser): read Rutherford County's waste disposal page (paint section, center hours, one visit a day, no commercial waste), its solid waste page (Haley Road closed since June 24, 2024; Leanna takes oil-based paint), its environmental education paint guide, the City of Murfreesboro's recycling and hazardous waste page (oil-based paint by appointment at 615-898-7739; 2026 event October 10 at 4765 Florence Road; paint no longer accepted at mobile events) and garbage procedures page, TDEC's household hazardous waste page, Metro Nashville's hazardous waste page, the Rutherford County Habitat ReStore page, and PaintCare's listings for Haley Road and Leanna. Conflicts: the county's general center hours say Sunday is for household garbage only, while its Leanna notice, the city page and PaintCare list Sunday hours for oil-based paint; the city and PaintCare say to call for an appointment, but the county page doesn't; the county lists Leanna's ZIP as both 37129 and 37128; the city page gives the county phone once as 615-848-7739, which we treat as a typo for 615-898-7739. Not found: a paint amount limit, a reopening date for Haley Road, the city's hazardous waste item list (the PDF link was blocked), and whether the ReStore takes paint.

Checked October 13, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
