THE LOCAL ANSWERFor latex paint, call Hopkinsville Solid Waste's recycling contact at 270-484-4417 and ask how to dispose of it; the county's hazardous waste day doesn't take latex. Kentucky's fact sheet says to harden small amounts with cat litter or sand, let it dry outside, then set the open can out with the garbage. Keep oil-based paint sealed for the next Christian County collection; the 2026 one was October 10.
Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in Christian County, has no year-round paint drop-off. The only paint collection we found is the Christian County Household Hazardous Waste Collection, which took oil-based paint on October 10, 2026 at Hopkinsville Solid Waste on Mt. Zoar/Latham Road. Water-based (latex) paint wasn't accepted; the notice sent latex questions to the recycling contact at 270-484-4417. Kentucky's state fact sheet says small amounts of latex can be hardened and put out with the garbage.
Latex and oil-based go different ways
WKDZ's notices for the Oct. 10, 2026 collection listed oil-based paint and solvents as accepted. They said water-based paint and used motor oil would not be taken. Questions about those went to the recycling center at 270-484-4417 or cpowell@hswa.us. The city's recycling page lists that number for Christopher Powell, Recycling Manager at Hopkinsville Solid Waste Enterprise. Don't bring latex to the collection.
Kentucky's hardening method for latex
The Division of Waste Management fact sheet says to add a thickener (paint hardener, cat litter, sand or dry dirt) to small amounts of latex. Let it dry outside, out of reach of pets and children. Once it's solid and won't pour, set the open can out for garbage pickup. Ask the Enterprise first; its FAQ says no liquids in carts.
Never let oil-based paint evaporate
The same fact sheet says oil-based paint fumes are toxic and flammable, so don't dry it in the open. It tells you to ask your local solid waste coordinator. In Christian County, the only option we found was the county's household hazardous waste collection, which took oil-based paint in 2026. Questions go to 270-484-4417.
Cart and bulk rules in the city
Since April 13, 2026, only trash inside your Enterprise cart is collected. Bags or boxes left beside it stay. Bulk items go out on your street's twice-a-month bulk week, up to 2 cubic yards. The Enterprise's FAQ says hazardous materials and liquids never go in the cart, and roll-offs take no liquids.
County homes have a new hauler
Outside Hopkinsville, Crofton and Pembroke, Impact Waste Service has held the county's trash franchise since July 1, 2026, per the county's Solid Waste page. Kentucky New Era reported Impact's bid offered $12.41 a month for homes from July 2026 to June 2027. We found no Impact paint rule. Sign up or ask at 270-660-8331, or call the county Solid Waste Officer at 270-887-4137.
